BIFS Current Status

BIFS is currently having a break before it enters a new phase.

Please click here for a more detailed announcement from our chair about the future of BIFS.

In the meantime we can all still keep in touch and see films with Friends of BIFS (see the panel on the right).

Anthony Minghella 1954 - 2008

The untimely demise of Anthony Minghella is a great loss for World Cinema. We were fortunate to have met him and received the award for the BFFS Best New Film Society of the Year award from him in March 2006. BIFS would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of this filmmaker from Isle of Wight.

Visit this site for a tribute to Anthony Minghella CBE, a man whom it was impossible not to like; a towering talent of the British film industry, always gracious, modest and loving.

Following is the note posted by David Miller, Chairman, British Federation of Film Societies:

"I only ever met Anthony the once. Yet he made a huge impression. The event was the 2006 British Federation of Film Societies Film Society of the Year Awards Ceremony. Anthony had accepted our invitation to present our awards and what a superbly gracious guest he was". His speech to the audience is an absolute highlight and the full text is available here

Next FoB Film

The next Friends of BIFS film is Mongol (Germany, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, 2008)
Sunday June 8th 4:00pm at the Duke Of York's.

An illuminating and multi-dimensional portrayal of the legend of Genghis Khan, Bodrov’s Academy Award-nominated historical action epic is a powerful account of the conqueror’s early life and rise to power. Born in 1162 into a savage culture of feuding tribes and idiosyncratic traditions, the child Genghis becomes prey after his clan leader father is poisoned. Cast as a fugitive into the harsh terrain of the Mongolian steppe, the young warrior endures untold hardships in his attempts to elude death and fulfil his family legacy. Boasting dazzling photography and breathtaking scenes of combat and violent action, Mongol also sensitively portrays Genghis’s determined pursuit of his childhood bride, Tarugai.

What is Friends of BIFS?

To keep alive the collective experience of watching a film and chatting about it after, Friends of BIFS will meet on a monthly basis to see the best of World Cinema showing in Brighton.

The Friends of BIFS is a mailing list group that will comprise of not only previous BIFS members but also others who may be interested in getting involved. If you wish to be put on this mailing list then please email us at info@brightoninternationalfilmsociety.org. Also as some of the email addresses we have for previous BIFS members and regulars are no longer valid, please email us with your new details if you want to join FoB.

Although BIFS will co-ordinate the mailing list, you can use it to contact the rest of FoB to organize social cinema visits, provide information about future events or just sound off about the last film you saw.

BIFS' patron is Ken Loach

The world's leading social-realist filmmaker of such groundbreaking classics as Cathy Come Home, Kes, Land And Freedom and Sweet Sixteen is patron of BIFS.

What is BIFS?

BIFS is a film society located in Brighton & Hove.We organise screenings of films that are not easily seen or available, including globally diverse films that give an insight into different cultures, politics and perspectives from around the world. Crucially, after each film we meet for a post-film discussion led by a guest speaker, because we believe that to watch a film without discussing its merits is to enjoy only half the film experience. To read more about our aims, read our manifesto.

When and where do we meet?

BIFS screenings will normally be held on the first Wednesday of each month 6.30pm at the Duke of York's Picturehouse. Check our programme for up to date information on screenings and times. The post-film discussion, led by invited speakers, will now be upstairs at Circus, Circus, just over the road from the Picturehouse. We are also hoping to expand the number of venues we use in future.

How do I join?

Membership is currently available, by post, at £30.00 for one year. For more details visit our membership page by clicking here.

We also provide a free discussion forum and email newsletter for anyone interested in BIFS. You can register for both forum and newsletter by filling in our registration page.
