manifesto

Brighton & Hove benefits from the existence of a number of multiplexes, an independent cinema and smaller venues for viewing films. What it lacks is a forum where people can come together and discuss films, and an organisation that ensures exposure for different kinds of films from around the world. In other words, it lacks a film society! With the early development of cinema pioneered in Hove, coupled with the emergence of Brighton as a centre for the cultural industries, it is not before time that the city has a film society.

We, the film lovers in the city and surrounding areas of Brighton & Hove have come together to form the Brighton International Film Society for we believe the following:

  • that a healthy film culture depends on an exposure to a broad range of films. We believe that exposure to different types of films, be it International Cinema and/or alternative cinema - such as art, third, guerrilla, or experimental films, is important in opening our minds to different aesthetics, different cultures, different political positions and different psychological perspectives.
  • believe that cinema has the potential to not only express the despairs and disquiets of our society, it can also greatly influence and illuminate the shape of our society. Mainstream cinema often serves to reinforce the dominant ideas in society, and as such invites critiquing. But sometimes films provide a powerful means to challenge exploitation and oppression in our world, and occasionally films emerge as a radical art form inspiring us towards a better world.
  • that pleasure, meanings and relevant issues can be gained by reviewing old, classic and popular films. And these should be seen on the big screen as opposed to the television screenings that many have to make do with. This is vital for developing our critical appreciation of the cinema as an unique art form.
  • Most of all, we believe that watching a film without discussing and debating its meanings and merits is to enjoy only half the film experience. We aim to provide a forum for vibrant, intelligent and sensitive discussion of films – all genres of films from Hollywood to Bollywood, from old classics to new experimental films.
  • It is for these reasons that we have formed the Brighton International Film Society. If you sympathise with any or all of these aims, then we urge you to support this venture and join the society.
