March 2nd, 2005 - BIFS launched with inaugural event
To an excellent turn out of discerning film lovers in spite of the unusual cold and snow here, Atta Yaqub, the lead actor of Ken Loach’s Ae Fond Kiss, inaugurated the Brighton International Film Society at the Duke of York’s Picturehouse. Reading out Ken Loach’s message as patron of BIFS, he also remarked how proud he was to be associated with a film society that was committed to good world cinema.

Ken Loach is BIFS patron
The world's leading social-realist filmmaker of such groundbreaking classics as Cathy Come Home, Kes, Land And Freedom and Sweet Sixteen is patron of BIFS. We look forward to welcoming Ken to speak at one of our forthcoming screenings in Brighton.

Ken was unable to make our inaugural event and instead kindly sent this message:

"I’m very sorry not to be with you in Brighton for the launch of the Brighton International Film Society. Paul and I are currently engaged in a little mischief in Ireland - though none of the millions from the northern bank robbery have found their way into our accounts yet.

Working with Atta and Eva on Ae Fond Kiss was an absolute delight. We were constantly amazed at how well they dealt with everything we threw at them - and revealed some secret talents in the process!

Film societies have a very important function - to remind us of the diversity of films that are made and how much we miss from the offerings of the multiplexes. In the cinema you should be able to hear many voices. It is a pity that the Americans drown out most of the others."
