Director: Jafar Panahi. Iran 2000. 90 mins.
Duke of York’s. 6.30pm.
The Circle, one of the new Iranian Cinema’s greatest film releases in recent years, is written and directed by Jafar Panahi, a former assistant to Abbas Kiarostami, and acted by a mainly non-professional cast. The Circle offers a commentary both on the oppression of women in Iran, and the restrictive nature of Iranian filmmaking itself. On its release The Circle was suppressed by the Iranian government and denied a national theatrical release.
Our guest speaker is Nacim Pak, from SOAS, University of London. Nacim’s main research focus is on the employment of cinema in understanding and promoting religiosity in Iran, and she has also worked and presented on the representations of women in Iranian Cinema.
As ever, the excellent Senses Of Cinema site has a great article on the director here
