BIFS goes to COMFEST

April 28th - May 3rd - Manchester Commonwealth Film festival

The committee of BIFS has been invited by the Commonwealth Film Festival which opens at Manchester on 28 April, to take part in a panel discussion on "Film Societies and Film Festivals for the Promotion of a More Diverse Cinema". BIFS also conducted a film poll by film societies under the British Federation of Film Societies to vote for the best commonwealth film, which will be screened after the discussion. BIFS has also got a member on the BFFS film jury!

The BFFS has stated that this is the first time that film societies have featured so prominently in such a prestigious event and that they are looking forward to the whole occasion. We can take pride in this!

If you do find yourselves in Manchester between 28 April and 7 May then do join us - there will be something in the programme that will be of interest to you. If you can make it to the seminar on the 2 May, that will be great. We look forward to meeting you there.

BIFS' Ian McDonald is a BFFS jury member

As a result of discussion between Comfest, BIFS and BFFS, a film jury headed by BFFS will be presenting an award to the best film from C3 - Contemporary Commonwealth Cinema. The jury comprises of David Miller, Chair of BFFS, Ian McDonald, secretary of BIFS and a member of the Manchester film society.

BIFS' Geetha J. is a panel speaker

The Comfest is hosting a discussion on film festivals and film societies and how they could work more closely together. Both showcase films that do not get commercial release or are not very popular. They are, as such key elements of the exhibition side of the film industry. However, they tend to work quite apart from one another and a stronger collaboration could potentially support the exhibition of a more diverse cinema.

A strong panel of four film experts chaired by Alex Stolz, Distribution and Exhibition Executive at the UK Film Council will debate this topic. David Miller, Chair of the British Federation of Film Societies, Geetha J., founder and chair of the Brighton International Film Society, John Grieve, Director of the Manchester and Salford Film Society, and Eva Nelander, Programmer of the Commonwealth Film Festival are the speakers. The debate will be followed by a surprise screening
